Malware in mobile phones is generally thought of as just an Android problem but iPhone users shouldn't be so casual about security. Although the Apple App store keeps malicious apps out it iPhone users should still have some type of protection.

There are a number of ways to keep your iPhone safe. You can create a secure Internet connection by using a virtual private network or you can let an app do all the work. Download an app called Hotspot Shield VPN and it will keep your Internet connections safe, protect your browser as well as third-party apps and encrypt your iMessage conversations. The app comes from Anchor Free and you can download it from the App store for free although the service will cost $1 per month or $10 per year. If you're concerned about trusting your data with a third-party, AnchorFree offers a free 7 day trial period.

If you're looking for a more passive service then there's Lookout Mobile Security for iPhone. Lookout has a similar service for Android phones and its now offering the same service for iPhone users. Lookout offers three main functions: find device, system administration and security and backup. The find device function allows users to look up the location of their phones using a Lookout account. If you lose your iPhone, this is a pretty useful function to have. The Backup service does exactly what its name suggests, it back-ups your data and syncs it across other devices. If you're switching phones you can just transfer your contact list through the Lookout cloud.

As for security, Lookout will simply alert the user when to update their iOS and when you're going on an unsecure Wi-Fi network. It will also tell you what apps are tracking you. Lookout doesn't detect and remove malware on the iPhone like it does for Android phones. The company probably figures that the iOS doesn't need that service. Lookout Mobile Security is free for download at the app store.

Android phones have the most trouble with malware. To protect your Android phone from malicious apps you need to get a good anti-virus scanner. According to recent study by AV-Test, an independent security firm, paid security apps like Kaspersky and F-Secure's Mobile Security Suite can detect at least 50 percent of malware samples. In comparison free apps like Antivirus Free, BluePoint Antivirus Free, GuardX Antivirus, Kinetoo Malware Scan, LabMSF Antivirus beta, and Privateer Lite, only detected 10 percent of malicious apps. Zoner AntiVirus Free sniffed out 32 percent.

Aside from getting a good security app, Android users should keep some simple tips in mind. Always research the publisher of your app and read any online reviews about the app you want to install. If the publisher only has one app out and it looks shady don't risk it. Check app permissions. What does the app want to do to your phone? Avoid installing Android Package files if you don't trust where the file came from. Be aware of online scams. If you are using your phone to access your bank accounts don't set it to log in automatically.

Keeping your phone safe is always a matter of being constantly vigilant. As long as you have a good security program and be careful in what apps you download, you can keep your smartphone malware free.
