HoloLens Is The Reason Behind Acquiring Minecraft, Says Microsoft
Microsoft HoloLens was one of the technologies that captured the attention of all software developers at the Build 2015, an annual developer conference hosted by Microsoft from April 29 to May 1. The HoloLens technology was not an accidental creation by the company rather Microsoft has been working on its HoloLens technology for quite some time now. Microsoft had acquired Minecraft for billion in September 2014 as it believed that Minecraft could serve as key feature to the HoloLens platform, according to reports.
In an interview with the New York Times, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella confirmed that HoloLens was the main reason behind spending billion on the block building game Minecraft, reports Venture Beat.
HoloLens is an augmented reality headset that presents 3D virtual reality with actual reality, reports Tech Times.
Minecraft is quite popular across PC, consoles, mobiles and it has been downloaded by people more than 60 million times, reports Venture Beat. By taking over Minecraft, Microsoft will now get into something very new, as per the Venture Beat report. The report also explains, combining Minecraft with HoloLens makes sense because when it comes to HoloLens, Microsoft will focus on concepts like interactions and creations.
HoloLens is expected to be released at the same time as Windows 10 and as per Microsoft, Windows 10 will arrive by mid summer but as per latest reports, the entire OS release is likely to take a year’s time, reports Tech Times.
While demonstrating the HoloLens at the 2015 Build Conference, Microsoft allowed the software developers to try the HoloLens devices, as per the Tech Times report. The presence of Oculus Rift and Samsung's Gear VR could be a big challenge for Microsoft in the virtual reality space. Microsoft feels its hologram innovation with augmented reality will surpass other brands, reports Tech Times.
Besides demonstrating HoloLens at the 2015 Build Conference, Microsoft also announced new features in Windows 10 and showcased a set of software development kits that will help developers in bringing their code for the Web, Win32,.NET, Android and iOS to Windows 10. Microsoft also announced new Microsoft Azure data services, .NET tools, Visual Studio and runtimes for Windows, Linux and Mac, along with APIs that will help developers to build apps with Office 365, according to Microsoft’s official web page.
