Google recently released Android 4.4.2 KitKat which contains major fixes for Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices. It is available now via Firmware-Over-the-Air update and can be rooted with CWM recovery compatibility. Here are the steps to root and install CWM on Nexus devices running Android 4.4.2 KOT49H build version.

Prerequisites

1. Nexus devices only. LG Nexus 4, LG Nexus 5, ASUS Nexus 7 1 & 2 and Samsung Nexus 10 running Android 4.4.2 KOT49H.

2. Download and install the necessary USB drivers for your Nexus devices by clicking on the model below:

a. LG Nexus 4

b. LG Nexus 5

c. ASUS Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013

d. Samsung Nexus 10

3. Create a manual backup of all personal information, settings and data files you have stored inside your Nexus device.

4. Make sure that the device has at least 80 per cent of battery level in order to prevent power interruption during the rooting and installation process.

5. Enabled the USB debugging mode on the device. Here are the steps for every Android version to enable it:

a. 2.3 Gingerbread: Settings > Applications > Development.

b. 4.0 ICS: Settings > Developers options.

c. 4.2 JB and 4.4 KitKat: Settings > About phone > Build number > Tap it 7 times > Go back > Developer options.

6. If your Nexus device is a smartphone, unlock the boot loader of your LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 5.

7. Download the SuperSU rooting kit and ClockworkMod recovery appropriate for your Nexus device to the computer:

a. LG Nexus 4

b. LG Nexus 5

c. ASUS Nexus 7 1 or Nexus 7 2

d. Samsung Nexus 10

8. Download the Android SDK and fast boot toolkit on your computer then prepare both toolkits for your rooting process.

Rooting Procedure

1. Connect the Nexus device on your computer then copy the SuperSU zip to the internal storage.

2. Disconnect the Nexus device from your computer then turn it off.

3. On your computer, copy and paste the ClockworkMod recovery file to the "android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools" directory you have created during the preparation of Android SDK and fast boot toolkits.

4. Bring your Nexus device to fast boot or boot loader mode by pressing and holding the "volume down + power keys" for a few seconds till you see text on the screen.

5. Go back to your computer then open a Command Window on the "android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools" directory (shift > right-click > open Command Prompt).

6. Type the following commands appropriate for your Nexus devices:

a. LG Nexus 4: fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-mako.img

b. LG Nexus 5: fastboot flash recovery hammerhead-cwm-6.0.4.4.2-unofficial.img

c. ASUS Nexus 7 1: fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-grouper.img

d. ASUS Nexus 7 2: fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-flo.img

e. Samsung Nexus 10: fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-manta.img

7. Once it is completed, go back to your Nexus device and select RECOVERY from the menu to boot into recovery mode.

8. Inside the recovery mode, create an Android backup of the current ROM by selecting "backup and restore > backup" to save a copy on your internal storage. You may restore this anytime using the save procedure.

9. Install the SuperSU rooting kit by selecting "flash zip from SD card > choose zip from SD card > find the SuperSU update zip > confirm installation.

10. After the installation, go back to the main menu then select "reboot system now."

11. It may take up to five minutes to reach the home screen after the rooting process.

Congratulations! Your Nexus device is now rooted and features a custom recovery for flashing custom ROMs and other mod apps. For checking, download the Root Checker from the Play Store.
