HP has promised to produce more TouchPads after consumer demand saw the $99 tablet flying off the shelves.

In a blog post, Hewlett Packard Inc. said it will temporarily make more units of the tablet the company axed just 11 days earlier.

"Despite announcing an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand," said HP PR strategist Mark Budgell in the statement

However, consumers who want to get their hands on the heavily discounted tablet will have to wait awhile for the new units to ship. HP also cautioned buyers that there might not be enough tablets for everyone.

"We don't know exactly when these units will be available or how many we'll get," Budgell wrote. "We can't promise we'll have enough for everyone." The company said it is pleased by the response it has gotten so far.

HP had positioned the TouchPad to be a rival tablet to the dominant Apple iPad. Unfortunately the tablet never gained much ground against the Apple tablet and HP pulled the plug just two months after the device debuted. The TouchPad's resurgence of late only came when HP dropped prices to just $99 a unit. Suddenly consumers were lining up in retail stores just to get a TouchPad.

Budgell said that HP had been surprised by the rousing demand for the TouchPad considering that HP will no longer continue to support the development of the webOS software.

"Let me first say thank you for enthusiasm for this product. Since we announced the price drop, the number of inquiries about the product and the speed at which it disappeared from inventory has been stunning.

"I think it's safe to say we were pleasantly surprised by the response," Budgell wrote.

He also revealed that the final run of TouchPads will be completed before the fourth quarter of the financial year, around October 31.
