HTC J Butterfly and Asus Padfone 2 are two of the latest smartphones to make a noise among gadget watchers recently.

Both phones come in phablet form. Both devices also boast of powerful quad-core processor and robust onboard memory. For alternative smartphones, HTC J Butterfly and Asus Padfone 2 have packed enough features to be noticed. But which gadget has more perks, and what "fine detail" must you know?

HTC J Butterfly Perks and Caveat

The HTC J Butterfly features a 5-inch 1080p full HD display, 443 pixels per inch (ppi). In English, it is like squeezing a luxury HD screen into pocket size, but the crystal clear quality remains the same.

The HTC J Butterfly is powered by Quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor (1.5GHz) with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage (expandable with micro SD). A smartphone boasting of a quad-core is worth trying if only to discover another level of user-smartphone compatibility.

The HTC J Butterfly comes in red. This has to be a feature. So much for black and white. A passionate red colour should get as much attention as directed to the serious black and the very clean white.

Caveat: The HTC J Butterfly will be exclusively available via KDDI in Japan. See the gadget photos at micgadget.com.

Asus Padfone 2 Perks and Caveat

The Asus Padfone 2 features a 4.7in 720p Super IPS+ display with 550 nits of brightness. In English, its screen is bigger than regular smartphones' (hence, people call it a phablet). And its screen resolution can compete strongly with other devices.

The Asus Padfone 2 is powered by quad-core Qualcomm, with choices of onboard memory: 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB. You can trust the quad-core to run fast. Just cross your fingers for the gadget's operating system to meet the speed and render fluid processing of the applications.

The Asus Padfone 2 comes with a 13MP camera. (HTC J Butterfly has 8MP, with a wide F2.0 aperture for low-light shooting). If you are the type who prints out photos, you are not supposed to have poor quality prints with the Padfone 2.

Caveat: The Padfone 2 will have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box. Uh-oh, Ice Cream Sandwich is out of date relative to the latest Android devices. However, an Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean upgrade is coming up. See the gadget photos at stuff.tv.

It is difficult to get over the 5-inch 1080p full HD display of the HTC J Butterfly. If you are heavy on the visuals, this is the kind of stuff you would want to -- at the very least -- try. Pitted against another device running with Ice Cream Sandwich, the contest ends quickly there. You just hope the HTC J Butterfly could ship internationally pretty soon.
