HTC vs Nokia: HTC One to Tap New Mic Suppliers after Nokia’s Win on Preliminary Injunction
HTC recently confirmed that the company will search for a new supplier to provide enhanced microphones for the HTC One after Nokia's triumph on a preliminary injunction. An argument has surfaced between the two smart phone companies on the STMicroelectronics-made microphones and an unnamed court judge's verdict bans the supply of the mic parts to smart phone manufacturers except the Finnish company, Nokia.
HTC further clarified that Nokia's filed injunction was not really against their company but it was with the STMicroelectronics. According to the preliminary injunction statement, the microphone part incorporated in the HTC One smart phones was supposed to be exclusively manufactured for Nokia's smart phones at a limited time.
HTC officially revealed in a press release that Nokia's attempt to acquire a recall on the microphone parts already supplied to them has failed. The court's ruling stated that "any of the high-dynamic range (HDR) microphones involved and HTC already has in its inventory could continue to be used."
The ruling was reportedly made based on the case that the Taiwanese smart phone manufacturer may not have known about the exclusive contract between STMicroelectronics and Nokia. With the court's decision on the issue, HTC released a statement that expresses their disappointment.
However, HTC assured the device enthusiasts that they are now working on an enhanced HTC One microphone design and looking for alternative solutions on their current smart phone parts problem. The company believes that this strategy will not affect the future supplies and market sales of the HTC One smart phones.
The Taiwanese company is still confident that they will find another quality microphone manufacturer for their HTC One smart phone even before the current STMicroelectronics microphone parts in their inventory runs out.
