Huawei official Tony Wen explained to Wall Street Journal about the mobile network's upcoming fifth generation capability. "By 2020, there will be billions of connections and 5G can provide massive connectivity. The technology will be able to deliver a similar experience to that of a fibre broadband connection at home," Wen stated.
Wen further revealed: "It can provide speed of 10 GBps, which is 100 times faster than the mobile technology used these days." However, the Huawei official warned that the 5G technology will be fully ready in 2020.
For the 4G technology, Huawei Technologies has the equipment to support 85 high-speed Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. The Chinese company conducts as well a speed test on the 4G technology on the MagLev train in Shanghai.
Huawei has set up an LTE network that supports wireless connectivity on the high speed train that runs from the center district of Shanghai to the International Airport. The track's total length is 31km while the train's speed can reach up to 431km/hr.
According to Huawei, its 4G technology can supply a download speed of up to 50MBps on that track length and train speed. Worldwide mobile operators have also started heading towards the direction of the LTE, 4G and 5G networks.
Other companies working on the 5G technology include Nokia, Alcatel and Ericsson as they join an EU funded project to build up the fifth generation network. Samsung, the South Korean technology giant, has confirmed as well about successfully testing the 5G technology with a commercial roll-out ready in 2020.
Aside from the networks and systems, the handsets are required to be quickly developed for the arrival of the 5G technology. The CAT4 LTE network can already be supported but the only device that can utilize the increased speed is the Huawei Ascend P2 so it increases the pressure on the device and chip manufacturers to keep up with the fast technology pace.
