iPad 3, iPhone 5 Will Have 4G LTE, Analyst Predicts
An analyst believes Apple Inc. (NYSE:AAPL) will be launching upgrades for two of its iOS devices with 4G LTE capabilities.
According to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu, such technology will be included in the upcoming iPhone 5 and iPad 3.
"We are frankly not surprised as this is consistent with our supply chain checks in mid-January. As we had commented then, we believe the upcoming iPad refresh could be significant with notable new features including a 4G LTE wireless, beefed upprocessor, higher resolution screen, and Siri voice recognition," Wu said.
According to a post from Wall Street Journal, the two top U.S. carriers, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc., will sell iPad 3 and iPhone 5 with 4G LTE technology. Currently, the two carriers sell 3G versions of the devices. The report also speculated that the next iPad will revert to 3G tech, which doesn't carry LTE, before the end of 2013 when analysts expect that 80 percent of Americans will enjoy LTE. Wu expected that this feature will definitely boost the sale of the devices.
Aside from LTE technology, iPad 3 is rumored to be equipped with Apple's A6 or a quad-core ARM-based processor. Quad-core designs are coming from various ARM partners, and the Tegra 3 has already been launched by Nvidia, as well as the Snapdragon S4 from Qualcomm. The Korea Times reported in November 2011 that the A6 processors are to be manufactured by Samsung, despite the companies' continuing patent battles. Moreover, the device will be equipped with 2048 x 1536 resolution Retina Display with a size of 9.7 inches. There is a rumor that Samsung will continue its partnership with Apple and will take charge of making the displays.
The much-awaited iPhone 5, on the other hand, has a speculated release date this June. According to rumors, the new iPhone will be sporting 4G LTE capabilities, iOS 6 and an A6 processor. Moreover, the iPhone 5 could be waterproof, enhanced Siri support and iCloud integration.
The iPad 3 is speculated to be launch on March 7. iPhone 5 is expected to be launch in June. However, Apple did not confirm any of these rumors.
