iPad 5 or iPad Mini 2 Release: Both Arriving with Retina Display, Which Apple Tablet Should You Wait For?
iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 release dates might coincide with the iPhone 5S release later this year. It was originally rumoured that iPad 5 will take the spotlight first, but this is rather unlikely to happen now. Apple CEO Tim Cook has virtually announced a major unveiling later this year for new products. But which iDevice excites fans the most?
When the iPad mini was released in November last year, it drew criticisms over its lack of Retina display. At the same time, it gathered positive feedback for being so light, it redefined tablet portability for heavy users. The iPad mini 2 will reportedly come with Retina technology for a pixel density of about 324 ppi. That is a huge jump from the current 163 ppi. Apple reportedly found ways to improve the mini's screen while keeping it light.
As the iPad mini 2 is all about mainitaining its weight, the iPad 5 is about slimming down. Reports indicate the next iPad will be 25 to 33 per cent lighter than its predecessor. It will also reportedly take after the iPad mini and cut down its bezel size for an even bigger display. But are users still interested in full-sized tablets?
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the anticipated refresh of Nexus 7 are expected to rival iPad mini 2 later this year. The iPad 5 remains a strong contender in its class, but the bigger tablets are already being eclipsed by the 7-inch to 8-inch devices.
Still, your choice of Apple tablet should be based on your needs instead of trends. If you put a high premium on portability, iPad mini 2 is better for you. The smaller device is definitely easier to carry around than the iPad 5. However, if you would rather see your media content in bigger detail, go for iPad 5. There might be some truth to the rumours that it will definitely be lighter when it comes out.
When it comes to specs under the hood, the iPad 5 is likely to sport the more current Apple processor. Perhaps iPad mini 2 will be powered by Apple A5X or the more current A6 (the system-on-chip on iPhone 5). The iPad 5 could run on Apple A7, the anticipated upgrade from the A6X on iPad 4. Storage variants are likely to be the same. But there are rumours that iPad 5 will come in much larger storage variants. However, light to moderate users are not likely to notice some difference in performance. The heavy users, on the other hand, might choose the bigger iPad for its more robust system.
