IPhone 5 Countdown: Say Hello to Your A.I. Phone
ANALYSIS
After the Apple event on Tuesday, expect your iPhone to be smarter than the average smartphone. If the rumors about the new Assistant app for the iPhone are true, you would be thinking that finger gestures are ancient technology.
The iPhone Assistant was the Siri Personal Assistant Software. The company that produced Siri was bought by Apple in April 2010 with its founder Steve Jobs saying Siri was acquired because of their artificial intelligence technology and not for its voice recognition or search capabilities. The Siri is now available for download in the Apple App Store for free.
During this event, there would be more focus on software instead of hardware. The Assistant feature will be unveiled and with it a more natural and easy interaction with your iPhone. Most people will jokingly liken the feature to SkyNet of the "Terminator" movie fame. They're mistaken, of course, as this feature is more like Jarvis known in the "Iron Man" comics, animation and films.
While there are still no plans of producing an iArmor or some sort, this improved feature will take the interaction with the iPhone to the next logical step: voice commands.
What is the Assistant?
Assistant was rumored to be a learning A.I. It recognizes your voice and will learn your quirks and preferences as time goes by. You could surf the Internet or find a place or item via voice commands, dictate e-mails and SMS, and open applications,. Many are skeptical to this technology as many have had experience with voice recognition programs in the past.
But remember, Siri, before becoming an app in the App Store was a military project. Siri is the product of the U.S.'s biggest artificial intelligence project ever, the CALO program. The "Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes" is a project founded by DARPA and staffed by 300 researchers for five years.
The Future of iPhone and iOS
What does this mean for the future of the iPhone or the future of the iOS? This would be a whole new way to communicate with any Apple device. They would be more personal as they would only recognize your vocal commands. Finally this could apply to all sorts of application in your daily life. It would be your personal butler. Just like Jarvis being commanded by Tony Stark to complete complicated tasks such as engineering a new Iron Man suit.
