Recent patents filed by tech giant Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) hinted on some of the possible features of the upcoming smartphones dubbed as iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S.

The patents suggest that the new iPhone models will have double pixels and ear proximity measurement capability.

According to tech blog WeiPhone, the next iPhone will have double the pixels of the iPhone 5. According to this rumor, the display is also expected to take up more space on the handset, which is likely to have a narrower bezel that's similar to that of the iPad Mini's design. In this version of the alleged iPhone 6 story, the device is being prepared for a September shipment.

However, Mac Rumors claimed that Apple did change its resolution last year when it released the iPhone 5, which require all app developers to make changes to their apps because of the taller screen. It may be unlikely that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will want to do that again a second year in a row. In previous versions of the iPhone, the company went two years between resolution changes.

Tech websites also unearthed other patents like the Ear Proximity Measurement Capability, which Apple filed years ago. According to the patent, this enables the user to measure the distance between the device and the user's ear for the purposes of volume control.

The unannounced iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S are clouded by a myriad of rumours. A lot of concept renders are emerging on the internet as the devices' release date nears.

Rumour has it that the next iPhone will feature Retina or IGZO screen display, A7 quad core chip processor, iOS 7, 128GB internal storage, 13 mega-pixel camera, and longer battery life. The lack of NFC support on the iPhone 5 was one of the biggest criticisms aimed at Apple's smartphone.

Meanwhile, the cheaper iPhone 5S is rumoured to sport a plastic casing, 4-inch screen display, dual core processor and 8-megapixel camera.

It is initially reported that the new iPhones will be launched in June along with the upgraded iOS. However, other reports stated that the devices will make its debut in September.

The Apple chief Tim Cook also dropped several hints that the upcoming iPhone 6 and 5S will be released later this year. Cook said that no new products are to launch before the end of the year.

However, the Cupertino-based tech company did not give an official statement on the rumours surrounding iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S.
