iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus’s Big Screens: Pros and Cons Towards Next-gen Quality Gaming
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have finally been announced as official smartphones coming out from Apple come September, but in terms of gaming, there has been mixed speculation as to how it will transform the industry and landscape of mobile gaming. For instance, Apple has also embraced the increase in screen sizes, as it pushes the device to bigger screens that are 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch in size.
However, there are some who deem that this may not be the best move when creating a game for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Polygon reports that, on the end of the gamers, bigger screens may prove harder to play games on.
"To be honest, it's not so much about making it hard to develop the games. We'll figure that out. But it makes it hard to design games that are really nice to play," Bennett Foddy, developer, said to Polygon.
One good example here would be the games that could be played using one hand. Mobile games are still considered to be recreational, especially for those who are playing them to pass time during the commute. This is why some games are designed for one-hand play--you can use the time on the train or the cab without it being too much of a hassle.
What can prove challenging to develops would be how to position the game on a bigger screen so that the entire screen can function in the way that is dictated by gameplay. This means having no unreachable areas when you're playing with one hand for a portrait mode-oriented game, among others.
But even with the potential cons of the big screens for the upcoming iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, that has not stopped Apple from planning games the devices. At least seven developers are coming together to create games for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
According to VG 24/7, the two Apple devices will be hitting in Sept. 19 together with the iOS 8. More than this, however, there is also the fact that the Metal 3D will be debuting alongside the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This will allow better performance than what developers have been able to handle with other iOS versions.
For developers, it has also become easier for the development of games. Since the iPhone 6 will be shipping with a 4.7-inch display while the iPhone 6 Plus will stretch screens up to 5.5-inch, the difference in the screen size would have proven hard in developing games. But the iOS 8's Metal graphics API will allow developers an easier time in creating games.
The Guardian adds that Metal allows for more sophisticated graphics and computations without having to stick to traditional APIs. In short, you can easily create games that offer console-like quality without having to double the effort.
The fact that Metal has also been helmed with the help of engine makers including Epic and Crytek makes it the perfect fit for gaming development for smartphones, at least for Apple. And according to Forbes, publishers are already lining up to partner with the company to create higher-quality games.
For now, the gaming industry for mobile phones does find innovation thanks to the announcement of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It does satisfy the thirst of fans who want to play on bigger, high resolution screens, but how it affects overall development of games and the type of games being developed remains to be seen.
