iPhone 6 v. iPhone 5S: Find Out How The New iPhone 6 Scores Over Last Year's iPhone 5S
The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 was announced alongside the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus on Sept 9. The iPhone 6 Plus has been designed to take on Android smartphones with larger displays such as the Galaxy Note 4 and the LG G3. The iPhone 6, on the other hand, is the successor of iPhone 5S, which competes against mid-range as well as upper-range smartphones.
Here we have pitted last year’s iPhone 5S with the new iPhone 6 to find out whether it is a good decision to upgrade to the newer iPhone.
Design
With a thickness of only 6.9 mm, the iPhone 6 is slimmer than the iPhone 5S, which measures 7.6 mm. Since the iPhone 6 comes with a larger display, it weighs 129 g, which is comparatively heavier than the iPhone 5S which weighs only 112 g.
The rear of the iPhone 5S has a matte aluminum plate placed between two strips of glass frame. The backside of iPhone 6 is now decked with an all-anodized aluminum case.
The exterior of iPhone 6 is resistant to dust and water. iPhone 5S lacks such a feature. Both handsets are available in gray, silver, and gold.
Display
The iPhone 5S came with a 4.0-inch retina display equipped with a resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels. It supports a pixel density of 326 ppi.
The iPhone 6 comes with a larger display screen of 4.7 inches. It offers a display resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels with the same pixel count of 326 ppi.
Processor and Graphics
The iPhone 5S is powered by the A7 processor. It is a dual-core processor working at 1.3GHz.
The iPhone 6 is blessed with a superior A8 processor which is capable of offering 25% more processor power and 50% more energy efficiency. Since it is equipped with Metal game engine, users will be able to enjoy a high-end console gaming experience on the iPhone 6.
Camera
The iPhone 5S has an 8-MP iSight camera seated at its rear along with dual-LED (dual tone) flash. It supports 1080p full HD video recording at 30 fps. The front-facing 1.2-MP camera is sufficient for FaceTime video calling.
Apple has not upped the number of megapixels on the iPhone 6. It is housed with an 8-MP iSight sensor that comes with a new Focus Pixel sensor feature which can automatically sense the lighting of the environment for achieving autofocus quickly.
The iPhone 6 is also equipped with dual-LED (dual tone) flash and 1080p full HD video recording at 60 fps. The front-facing 1.2-MP camera still features 720p video shooting and now also supports selfie photo shooting features like burst mode and HDR mode.
Storage Options
The iPhone 5S features various storage options: 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB.
In contrast, Apple is not offering 32 GB for iPhone 6 this year, but it features significant additional storage in its handset. The available storage options for the new iPhone 6 are 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB.
Connectivity
The iPhone 5S does not feature NFC which allows users to make secure payments at shopping outlets using their handset. This feature has been available on Android smartphones for quite some time now.
Now, the NFC feature, along with a payment program called Apple Pay, is available on the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 features 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which is three times faster than iPhone 5S’s Wi-Fi connectivity prowess.
Battery
The iPhone 5S is packed with a non-removable 1560mAh battery. According to PhoneArena, the battery of iPhone 5S can offer 3G talk time of 10 hours, Wi-Fi browsing for 10 hours and video playback for 10 hours.
On the other hand, the larger 1810mAh battery of iPhone 6 can offer 3G talk time of 14 hours, Wi-Fi browsing for 11 hours and video playback for 11 hours.
Price
The 16 GB iPhone 5S is now available with an on-contract price of $99, while the 16 GB model of iPhone 6 can be now pre-ordered for $199.
