Jordan Spieth reclaims world no. 1 despite missing the cut at Deutsche Bank Championship
Jordan Spieth has reclaimed his World No. 1 ranking despite missing the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday. Spieth missed two cuts in consecutive starts, but the American golfer was still able to dethrone Rory McIlroy from the top spot of the world golf rankings.
Spieth had surprisingly dropped out of contention in the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoff, missing the cut for the second straight time. Although the 22-year-old Spieth was able to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking from McIlroy, the American golfer’s reign as the top golfer in the world will only be for a week, thanks to the quirks of the pointing system.
According to Yahoo Sports, Spieth regained the top spot because Australia’s Jason Day did not win at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and McIlroy did not finish solo 10th or better at TPC Boston. Spieth and McIlroy will not earn any points when the FedEx Cup playoffs takes a one-week break next week, which leaves a gap in the four-event series. However, after finishing better than 44th this week, the Irishman will benefit from the break to reclaim the No. 1 spot.
McIlroy, who will head into the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at the BMW Championship, was not too worried about losing his world No. 1 spot. The 26-year-old McIlory said suddenly losing his spot on the top of the leaderboard was understandable after recent struggles in his game.
"People aren't blind,” McIlroy said, the Telegraph reported. “They can see who's playing the best golf - and right now, it isn't me.”
Spieth initially acquired the top spot of the world golf rankings from McIlroy after finishing behind Day in the US PGA Tour Championship at Whistling Straits. But the 22-year-old Spieth only held the top position at the leaderboard for two weeks after a poor performance at The Barclays.
