Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.: Pacquiao-Mayweather Will Happen, Must Do It For Boxing Fans
Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. has seen his share of big money fights during his career that he’s excited to see that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao super fight might finally happen this year. The Mexican boxing legend believes that the undefeated American and former eight-division Filipino champion must meet in the ring and make the fight happen for the sake of the boxing fans who already have waited long enough for the marquee match-up.
“The fight is meant to be done. Unfortunately, there has been no fight. They need to do it for the benefit of fans around the world,” Chavez Sr. stated via boxingscene.com “However, it is a fight that eventually has to happen because Mayweather is being pressed hard by the fans and he's being pressed by the television network. Either way, they need to reach an agreement.”
The latest from of the Mayweather-Pacquiao front is that some of the specific broadcasting details have already been ironed out although there are still other issues to be discussed. There is still no official statement from either the Mayweather Jr. or Pacquiao camps but it is believed that the announcement will come from The Money Team of Mayweather Jr., who apparently has demanded the right to first share the news to the public.
Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., who is from Ciudad Obregon, Sonora in Mexico, is considered one of the greats in the sport finishing a colourful career with a win-loss-draw record of 107-6-4 with 86 knockouts. Among the big name opponents during his career are Edwin Rosario in 1987; Jose Luis Ramirez in 1988; Meldrick Taylor in 1990; Hector Camacho in 1992; Greg Haugen and Pernell Whitaker in 1993; and Oscar De La Hoya in 1996 and 1998, among others.
With a rich experience in giving the fight fans the bouts they want to see, Chavez Sr.’s opinion that Mayweather-Pacquiao should meet atop the ring is not a surprise statement. Just like the millions of boxing enthusiasts in the world, a boxing legend wants two warriors still during their prime to touch gloves and deliver what could be a classic boxing encounter.
