From Kanye West To Dr. Kanye West: Rapper Says He Will Receive Honorary Doctorate [SEE VIDEO]
Kim Kardashian West would be a proud wife. Her rapper husband Kanye West may be a college dropout but he will soon be addressed as Dr. Kanye West. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is giving Kanye an honorary doctorate degree, the rapper confirmed in his recent interview with a French language blog.
"I was a gifted artist since age 5 and won national competitions and went to art school," the 37-year-old rapper is quoted as saying in an exclusive interview to Clique. "I'm actually getting an honorary doctorate on May 5 from the Art Institute of Chicago," he added. The “Yeezus” rapper attended American Academy of Art and Chicago State University for some time before dropping out at the age of 20 to pursue his musical interests.
Kanye, who is known for his 'Kanyeisms,' was recently invited by Harvard University's Graduate School of Design for a lecture. He has also spoken at London's Central Saint Martins, a world famous centre for art and design education. Kanye is not new to awards but a doctorate would be his first. The rapper was given BET Visionary Award in February 2015. In his long career, the rapper has earned himself 21 Grammy Awards, an NAACP Image Award and four Billboard Music Awards too.
Kanye kicked off his career at an age of 20 to work as a producer for Foxy Brown and his good friend Jay Z. In 2004, he released his debut album titled, “The College Dropout.” He has released six solo albums in his career, including “Late Registration” and “Graduation.” His next album is titled "So Help Me God" and is scheduled to be released this summer.
A representative for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago “would neither confirm nor deny” if Kanye is due to receive the honorary doctorate degree, according to Hyperallergic. The website also added that the graduation ceremony for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is scheduled to take place on May 11 and not May 5, as Kanye said in his interview with Clique. If the rapper is awarded the doctorate degree by the School of Art Institute, he would follow the footsteps of his late mother Dr. Donda West, who was a former chairwoman of Chicago State University’s English department.
