Kanye West Working On A Video Game Inspired By His Mother
After a wildly popular performance at the recent Grammy awards ceremony, Kanye West has dropped a hint that there's more to him than just making music and running successful fashion labels. The popular rapper has revealed that he has been working on a video game.
Gamespot reports that West had been invited to Power 105.1 station's The Breakfast Club radio show where he talked about his upcoming album and a fashion tie-up with Adidas. The discussion veered to family and then to his deceased mother when Kanye dropped a fleeting remark regarding a video game that he has been working on.
The game is a tribute to his mother and based on "Only One," which is a song that the rapper had recorded in collaboration with former The Beatles band member Paul McCartney, according to Kotaku. The song itself led to unexpected hilarity when many Kanye West fans oblivious to McCartney's fame took to Twitter, praising West for "discovering new talent."
The yet unnamed game, which West has been working on for the past six months, involves the player guiding his late mother. The rapper didn't describe the gameplay in detail, but he said that it will have players guiding his mother into the light. The main goal is to propel her into the "highest gates" of heaven.
"So right now I'm working on a video game for 'Only One,'" said West during the radio broadcast. "The idea is, it's my mother going through the gates of heaven and you have to bring her to the highest gates of heaven by holding her to the light."
The rapper's mother passed away under controversial circumstances. Her 2007 death was technically attributed to coronary artery disease, but that was fallout of an existing condition exacerbated by plastic surgery. Her much-publicised death prompted then California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to pass a new law that enforced patients to obtain medical clearance before undergoing cosmetic procedures.
This won't be the first time that Kanye West has dabbled in video games. As Cinema Blend points out, the rapper owes his first musical endeavour to creating beats as a 12-year-old for his first video game concept. The game was admittedly "sexual" as it contained male and female genitalia in a "Mario Brothers" setting. However, that game never saw the light of the day.
Meanwhile, those who want Kanye in their video games can try out a fan-made game called Kanye Quest 3030. Made using free video game making tools, this is an old school JRPG-styled adventure where gamers play as West and encounter many recognisable faces from the music industry.
