Karl Lagerfeld Calls Kiwi Singer Lorde His ‘Passion’
Lorde has come far from being a simple and virtually unknown student in Auckland. These days, if she’s not winning awards and topping music charts with her breakthrough single “Royals,” she’s impressing some of the biggest celebrities in the world. Her latest admirer is none other than fashion great Karl Lagerfeld.
The 80-year-old German fashion designer was talking to 400 students from Paris’ Sciences Po University on Tuesday about a variety of topics, including his passion, his trademark sunglasses, his daily routine, and his position in the industry.
When he was asked about music, Lagerfeld has revealed what he’s currently digging at the moment.
“The tragedy of my life is that I can’t play the piano. I would have loved to. I love music,” he was quoted by the NY Magazine as saying.
“My passion at the moment is Lorde, a 16-year-old. She sung for something we had. Also, I love classical music.”
Lagerfeld, of course, was talking about the Kiwi singer, who is actually now 17 years old. It’s unclear, though, what he meant by her singing for something they had.
Lorde might be the fashion industry icon’s passion, but it’s unlikely that the teen singer would return the compliment.
The young star, who’s proud to be a feminist, has constantly reiterated the importance of humility and healthy body image.
Her chart-topping “Royals” is about being okay with not having the luxurious lifestyle celebrities have, while Lagerfeld is the very definition of opulence in the industry.
Lorde has also said girls shouldn’t worry about being “too perfect,” even citing Taylor Swift as an example of an “unattainable” beauty, while the designer infamously called British singer Adele “roundish” and said Pippa Middleton “should only show her back.”
So don’t be surprised if Lorde doesn’t return Lagerfeld’s praises any time soon.
Meanwhile, Ella Yelich-O’Connor, Lorde’s real name, just won four accolades in her home country. She won the international achievement award, people’s choice award, single of the year for “Royals,” and breakthrough artist of the year at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards on Thursday.
