Kim Jong-Un Cancels Moscow Trip And Stays Home As Reports Of Coup In North Korea Rise
North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has canceled his high profile trip to Moscow due to internal domestic pressures. The Moscow Victory Day parade would have been the leader's first foreign visit after he took over from his father in 2011. But analysts feel that the North Korean leader would be extremely vulnerable and may be ousted when he is not at home.
Moscow's Victory day parade on May 9 would mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Kremlin has planned a grand celebration and over 29 world leaders are expected to join the parade. A Kremlin spokesperson told reporters in a press conference on Thursday that the visit was cancelled because of “North Korea's internal affairs.”
Korean observers feel that Kim's position as the supreme leader has been on shaky grounds, which is evidenced by the slew of executions he ordered last week. The supreme leader ordered executions of 15 high profile officials on charges of espionage and other alleged crimes. As a third generation leader, he has ordered more executions during the same period than any other dictator. According to the Wall Street Journal, Kim has already started the accelerated missile and nuclear programs and has commenced on stockpiling plutonium and uranium warheads.
After the ascension of Kim Jong-un, the country has made a shift towards Kremlin with Moscow friendly statements. According to The Guardian, the state media of North Korea had declared 2015 "as the year of friendship,” which would focus on discovering cultural and business ties. Vladimir Putin also had friendly relations with Kim Jong-il, the incumbent North Korean leader's father and former ruler, and had sent lavish birthday presents like a plane full of horses.
According to North American Aerospace Defense Command Chief Admiral Willaim Gortney, North Korea has the ability to launch the nuclear capable KN-08, which can hit the west coast of USA. He also added that there is no evidence that North Korea has tested the missile
The victory day parade in Moscow would be attended by world leaders and is a prestigious event for Putin. But the event is boycotted by majority of the western leaders. Kim Jong-un has not been able to move out of his carefully orchestrated public appearances and canceling the Moscow visit points to trouble brewing against his dictatorship.
