Kim Kardashian App Review: Popular in Australia, Possibly Fetching $80M Earnings for Kanye West's Wife -- Report
The new Kim Kardashian app, also known as "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood" on iTunes, could fetch over $80 million for Kanye West's wife, according to reports. The celebrity app is popular in many countries, including Australia.
The in-app purchases that mobile users evidently do not mind is helping the Kim Kardashian app gain even more dollars to its title. Predictions are rife that other celebrities would follow suit, but Mrs Kardashian West gets a good head start in this celebrity branding trend in the realm of apps.
According to this Forbes.com page, Kim Kardashian's "earnings" as of June 2014 was $28 million. In contrast, reports are saying the app could earn a total of over $200 million this year alone. That total reportedly gives Kim over $80 million in cuts.
"All of that revenue is from in-app purchases like a $59 'Huge Star Pack' and other in-game items," reports 9to5mac.com. It remains to be seen whether the app would evolve into something that involves Kim's celebrity husband, Kanye West.
"Kim's voice guides users through the [Kim Kardashian app] and encourages them to spend up to $99 in exchange for virtual dollars to dress their avatar," Dale Carr, CEO of Leadbolt, was quoted in a report by the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH).
The Kim Kardashian app, rated 12+ on iTunes, is hardly an innovative concept. It is an adaptation of the Stardom Hollywood app, only with the K brand, SMH pointed out. The goal is to be a big name in Hollywood. The way to get there is by spending cash - virtual and otherwise. If players have insufficient funds, they can buy "K coins" to move forward.
As of July 18, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood ranks second-most downloaded free-to-play game in the U.S. App Store. In Australia, the popular Kardashian app takes the fifth place in the ranking for the same category. Apple iOS device owners can play on their iPhone or iPad.
"In addition to her in-game audio commentary, [Kim Kardashian] provided a significant amount of creative feedback [in the app development]," Niccolo De Masi, CEO of Glu Mobile, told NBC News.
The Kim Kardashian app allows players to engage in their Hollywood fantasy. In positive terms, it is about making one's dreams come true in the virtual world. In reality, it promotes vanity and quite possibly reckless spending.
On Twitter, people have various shout-outs on the new Kim Kardashian app. Some of the netizens are deeply worried about the implications of this app's popularity and the world's future in general.
The fact that Kim Kardashian has an app about playing in a superficial imaginary LA fashion/acting world really concerns me about the future
