‘Kitchen Nightmares’ Chef Gordon Ramsay Sued By Employees Over Wage Issues
"Kitchen Nightmares" host Gordon Ramsay isn't exactly practicing what he preaches on his show. The multi-Michelin-starred celebrity chef has been slapped with a class action suit by his former and current employees in his new restaurant in Los Angeles for allegedly failing to pay their wages.
Plaintiffs Jennifer Becerra, Montinique Dever, Andrea Bourke, and Lauren Benge filed the suit at the Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday on behalf of themselves and all hourly, non-exempt current and former employees of the Fat Cow restaurant, according to RadarOnline.com.
The employees claim that the hot-tempered chef failed to pay their wages for their working hours and for their overtime work, as well as failed to provide meal periods.
Fat Cow, the restaurant in question, is owned by defendants The Fat Cow LLC, FCLA LP, and Gordon Ramsay Los Angeles LP.
"During the Class Period, Defendants have: (1) required Class Members to work through their meal and rest periods without paying compensation for missed meal and rest breaks; (2) failed to pay Class Members minimum wages for all hours worked; (3) failed to pay Class Members premium compensation for all overtime hours worked; (4) failed to pay Class Members all wages due at termination and/or resignation;
"(5) failed to maintain and provide Class Members with proper documentation concerning their hours worked and their compensation; (6) converted the property of the Class Members; and (7) committed unfair business practices in an effort to increase profits and to gain an unfair business advantages at the expense of the Class Members and the public," their suit reads.
The plaintiffs seek a jury trial and an "award of economic damages according to proof on all applicable causes of action."
"We are aware there was a problem with previous management which has since been changed, but this is totally unacceptable if any truth to it," Ramsay's rep told the Web site.
This isn't the first time Ramsay and his Fat Cow have been sued. In April, the company the chef hired to renovate the restaurant sued because Ramsay allegedly failed to settle the total of the renovation bill.
The construction work totalled $191,235.24, but Ramsay apparently paid only a portion of it. He still owes the $45,350.35 balance of the bill, according to the lawsuit obtained by TMZ.
Ramsay hosts the U.S. reality show "Kitchen Nightmares," in which he attempts to help restaurant owners revive their flailing business by pointing out their mistakes and giving advice on how to fix them.
In the show's most controversial episode, he tried to help the owners of the Arizona restaurant Amy's Baking Company, but failed to do so after couple Amy and Samy Bouzaglo refused to accept criticisms. One of the mistakes Ramsay saw the couple made was to take for themselves the tips customers gave their servers.
So isn't it just a bit ironic that he is being sued by his employees for cheating them of their wages?
