Self-professed Amy Winehouse fan Lady Gaga has gotten the thumbs up from her idol's father to play the late singer in a biopic.

"I have heard that Lady Gaga is keen to play Amy in a film. I don't know what her English accent is like, but it's not just an English accent she would have to perfect - it's an English-Cockney-Jewish accent. so she better start practicing now," Mitch Winehouse tells Dean Piper of the Sunday Mirror.

"But she would be great," he adds good-naturedly.

The singer-songwriter passed away in July at age 27.

Exclusive reports from The Sun newspaper says the "Edge of Glory" hit maker visited the home where the singer was found dead.

A source tells The Sun that Gaga kept the visit low key, coming in disguise.

She has spoken of being deeply affected by the tragic death of her "musical hero".

But Gaga might not get the chance to step into the shoes of one of her biggest idols.

Mitch Winehouse reveals to Daily Mail that a biopic is unlikely. A former taxi driver, he owns the copyright to all of his daughter's music.

"It would hardly be a biopic without the music and we'd never allow the songs to be released," Winehouse says.

Winehouse shatters Gaga lovers who want to see the eccentric blonde play Amy.

"I never said Lady Gaga will play Amy in film," he tweeted on his official page.

Later, a spokesperson for the family reveals Winehouse didn't mean to imply that a biopic would never happen. Fans would be happy to hear that the Winehouse is open to the possibility of a film about his daughter.

"Mitch and the family would entertain ideas perhaps for a film but only one they were sure would tell the truth," the spokesperson clarifies to Entertainment Weekly.

In the meantime, Winehouse is happy to honor his daughter's name with a posthumous album "Lioness: Hidden Treasures".

He is also writing a memoir of Amy, the proceeds of which will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. It will be released in October 2012.
