LG Will Launch a New Smartphone With its Own Application Processor Odin
Korea's second largest smartphone manufacturing company LG Electronics will unveil a new phone later this month. The uniqueness of the phone is that for the first time it will be powered by a self made application processor.
Odin is LG's AP which is a system on the chip processor for the mobile. It is a processor just like Qualcomm Snapdragon or Samsung's Exynos. LG will launch its new smartphone powered by Odin early in the week according to a source. The launch of the new model of LG's self developed AP is imminent stated one source to ZDNet Korea.
This will be derived from the G3 line of smartphones and will also be named as such. The sources did not clarify whether this smartphone will be launched globally or only in Korea.
According to CNet, these rumours and speculations have been doing the rounds for many years. The LG powered AP Odin was to be unveiled commercially, but nothing has materialized so far. Initial speculations were that Odin would most likely be used in LG's flagship phone. But now it seems that the derivative will be used as a test run according to reliable sources. The new AP, Odin will be based on ARM Cortex A15 architecture which has been seen in Tegra and Exynos application processors. Odin will have the full support of full HD resolution with the ARM big.LITTLE multi core processor configuration.
LG has been in preparation for the AP since 2012, but there were problems which had to be addressed. The application processor Odin had problems related to unexpected overheating and rapid electricity consumption. These problems forced the company to repeatedly postpone the launch stated sources. But LG refused to comment.
Right now Qualcomm's Snapdragon along with Intel dominates the market followed by Samsung and MediaTek that are still trying to get a hold on the market. Apple too uses its own A-series processor for its own devices and gadgets. Their most recent application processors are the A8 and A8X that has been used in their most recent devices. Samsung has also developed its own AP, Exynos.
