LG’s 5-Inch Flexible OLED Display Confirms Unbreakable Panel Component for Phablet-Size iPhone 6?
Apple's rumoured iPhone 6 oversized smartphone gathered more steam as LG announced on Monday its plan to demo a 5-inch flexible OLED display at Canada's Society for Information Display's (SID) Display Week.
In a statement, the South Korean firm revealed that "will unveil an unbreakable and flexible 5-inch plastic OLED panel for mobile devices."
The display part brings in a new era in which "smart devices are being used more than ever and at increased risk for damage from drops, hits and other accidents," the company added.
The news came out as previous reports strongly suggested that Apple is working on a large-screen iPhone edition that will sport a more durable make, with emphasis on the display that relies on a premium plastic material for extra flexibility and durability.
Apple, in fact, is racing against its bitter rival, Samsung, to deliver the first smartphone with unbreakable screen. It was reported earlier this year that the Galaxy phone maker was deploying with the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3. Now it appears that consumers will have to wait until next year to enjoy the new mobile device technology.
And the possibility is there that Apple will beat Samsung on the game, its likely win to be delivered by the latter's compatriot, LG.
LG is now part of Apple's lucrative supply chain following the iPhone maker's decision to dislodge Samsung as one of its major mobile component supplier. In a new report, it was hinted that LG is making Retina compatible displays for the upcoming iPad Mini 2 and iPad 5.
With LG achieving a breakthrough in the flexible OLED display contest, it is not far-fetched then that Apple will again engage the Asian company once production of the rumoured iPhone 6 pushes through.
Touted as Apple's major redesign of its flagship smartphone, the iPhone 6 is also believed to introduce the use of wrap-around display plus the inclusion of invisible or disappearing control keys.
To be powered by the heavily-revamped iOS 7, the Apple phablet is right on course for a June 2014 release date, according to numerous projections offered by analysts.
