When Galaxy S5 was rolled out at MWC 2014, Samsung has surprised the public with its phone's superior battery specification with 2,800 mAh battery unit.

According to the company, the device can deliver up to 10 hours of Web browsing over LTE, 21 hours of 3G talk time and 11 hours of video playback with a single charge.

Also, Samsung boasted the new "ultrapower saving mode" expected to offer 24 hours of battery charge (standby) on a 10 percent battery. Upon switching to power-saving mode, the phone's display tones down to black and white colors and shuts down many unused apps in the background. With this battery package, Samsung Galaxy S5 guarantees excellent battery life.

Battery Test

According to the test conducted by Phone Arena, Galaxy S5 scored 8 hours and 20 minutes of battery life. The Web site reported Galaxy S5's battery outperformed phablets with much bigger and better batteries.

The tabular column below explains the various devices tested and their power to sustain battery charge. It is not surprising that Galaxy S5 is the second best smartphone in Phone Arena's test, while Samsung's very own phablet Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 sits at the top spot of the list with 8 hours and 58 minutes of battery life.

The flagship from Sony Xperia C is the smartphone with the longest battery life of 8 hours and 44 minutes. But Samsung Galaxy S5 takes the fourth spot in the list, including smartphones and phablets.

Comparatively, Galaxy S5 houses only a 2800 mAh battery, but it surpassed the phablets which house more than 3000 mAh battery units. Also, Apple has its device at the top with its iPad Air getting the third place with 8 hours and 38 minutes of battery life.

According to BGR, "It was revealed that Samsung might have upped the Galaxy S5 'firmware' a few software features to increase battery life on the handset. The software tools include GameXtend, NavXtend and WebXtend. These three software tools help in saving the battery life by 50%, 25% and 25% respectively, during various activities on the handset."

Phone Arena uses a custom Web-script to evaluate the battery life. The script is designed to replicate the power consumption of real-life usage.
