The Philippines was once tagged the texting capital of the world. On Tuesday, Time bestowed on the Southeast Asian nation another world title - the selfie global capital - on Makati City, the country's financial centre.

According to a database compiled by Time of over 400,000 Instagram photos tagged #selfie with geographic coordinates, of 459 cities, Makati topped the lsit with 258 selfie-takers for every 100,000 people. The title is shared with Pasig City, also a Philippine city.

The high number of selfie-takers in Makati could be due to the fact that the country has a young population who are tech savvy and most of them work in Makati City where a large number of foreign and local companies have their headquarters and run 24/7 operations.

Pasig also hosts the Ortigas Commercial District with thousands of young and tech savvy employees, which is a similar situation in Cebu City, also in the top 10 list.

The next 3 cities in the list are in the U.S, while the fifth spot is another Asian city. Three more Asian cities round up the top 10 list, with a third Philippine city, Cebu, in 9th place. In between them are 2 European and a Middle Eastern City.

Here is the top 10 list:

1. Makati City and Pasig City, Philippines - 258 selfie-takers per 100,000 people

2. Manhattan, New York - 202

3. Miami, Florida - 155

4. Anaheim and Santa Ana, California - 147

5. Petaling Jaya, Malaysia - 141

6. Tel Aviv, Israel - 139

7. Manchester, England - 114

Selfies are so popular that it was the word of the year in 2013, and a lot of celebrities from Pope Francis to TV host Ellen DeGeneres take selfies.

Time pointed out that its selfie-takers per capita list is not a perfect measure, but "it was far and away the most comprehensive means of comparing the 459 world cities that turned up at least 25 individual users in the database.

Beyond the love for taking selfies, the list is also an indicator of smartphone adoption rates and median income.

Besides Instagram, other social media portals are favourite posting grounds for selfies which prompted Skout, a flirting app, to ban shirtless singles selfies taken in restrooms, powder rooms or water closets.

The prohibition would affect a lot of celebrities who love selfies that show a lot of skin. The list includes Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and, of course, Miley Cyrus, more known for her eternally protruding tongue and twerking hips.
