Mark Zuckerberg's Triumphant Return to Harvard
Facebook creator Mark Zuckerburg recently returned to Harvard, his former academic home before he dropped out seven years ago and eventually becoming the 14th richest person in the U.S.
Mark Zuckerburg made his official trip back in Harvard not to re-enroll but to recruit future employees for his million-dollar social networking site Facebook and to meet with the school officials. This trip marks his "official visit" to Harvard despite the fact that he already made a recruitment trip in Harvard last November 2005. Mike Schroepfer, the vice president of engineering in Facebook accompanied Zuckerburg in his trip. According to a press release from Harvard, Zuckerberg will be meeting with computer science students and electrical and computer engineers. The discussion is moderated by Computer Science lecturer David J. Malan. Zuckerberg is also said to set a meeting with school officials including Harvard president Drew Faust. David Malan described Mark Zuckerberg as one of the "few tech rock starts" known by people all over the world. He also stated that Zuckerberg is already in the level of Microsoft's Bill Gates and Apple's Steve Jobs.
It is a known story that this was not the case for Zuckerburg before. His earlier creation entitled "Facemash" almost led to his expulsion from Harvard because he hacked university computers for student photos. Harvard computing officials were working on the university-wide online directory before when Zuckerberg commented that he could do the said job in a week. This ambition led to the early stages of Facebook when it was a campus-only social network. When Facebook started expanding outside of Harvard, it moved its operation base to Palo Alto, California in June 2004.
Andrew Noyes, spokesman for Facebook disclosed the company's goal in visiting these schools stating that "He (Zuckerberg) is eager to connect with computer science and engineering students from some of the best schools in the world, who may well be tomorrow's Facebook innovators." Every year, global corporation visit Harvard to do recruiting and Facebook is one of the companies to do it for this year. The news that Zuckerberg was visiting Harvard was spread through word of mouth and also with social networking sites Twitter and Facebook.
Harvard is not the only university in the agenda as Facebook begins its East Coast recruiting mission. Additional schools included in the list are Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University.
