"It's a movie about AIDS, but it's also really a civil rights movie," film director Ryan Murphy revealed to Entertainment Weekly. He further added: "I think it's more timely than ever before. It's really about the quest to be seen, not as a gay person or a straight person but just a person.... It's an activist movie that also has a really great love story in it. Of everything I've done in my career, I think it is the biggest labor of love."

Mr Murphy managed to adapt and direct Larry Kramer's semi-autobiographical story on the early years of the AIDS epidemic in New York City. The star-studded cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch and Jim Parsons.

According to the Big Gay Picture Show report, "Avengers" actor Mark Ruffalo portrays lead character Ned Weeks who became one of the first people raising awareness on the disease initially called "Gay Cancer" or now the HIV/AIDS disease. Matt Bomer temporarily leaves his con artist character in "White Collar" to portray Felix Turner, a gay fashion journalist who becomes Ned's lover.

"Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons will be the gay activist Tommy Boatwright while award-winning actress Julia Roberts portrays Dr Emma Brookner, a wheelchair bound doctor who appears to be the only one in New York taking the disease AIDS seriously. Jonathan Groff portrays Craig, the early victim of the disease with actor Taylor Kitsch as the boyfriend who kicks off as a closeted investment banker but becomes an AIDS activist in the end.

HBO is set to premiere the drama film in spring 2014.
