If Google plans to go metal for its Nexus 2015 smartphone then the base-model for the device is likely the phablet LG G4 Note. Reports from South Korea indicate that the supersized phone will be wrapped in metal.

According to G4Games, pointing to Korean-language ZDNet Korea as source, LG flagships will flash premium build and designs starting on the second half of 2015. But as the upcoming LG G4 is scheduled to touchdown anytime starting April this year, the device clad in metal is essentially ruled out.

So the best candidate to become the repurposed Nexus 2015 phone, replacing the Motorola Nexus 6, is the rumoured LG phablet that for now goes by the name LG G4 Note. That is if Google will indeed renew its partnership with the South Korean firm for this year’s Nexus smartphone project.

Earlier, reports came out that Google engineers have visited manufacturing facilities owned by LG, sparking assumptions that the next Nexus will again come from the Nexus 4 and 5 maker. Prior to this suggestion, the Internet search giant was reportedly looking on the possibility of collaborating with Huawei for a China-centric Nexus device.

Premium flagship

The move from plastic to metal makes sense for Google as the Nexus 6 successor will have to tussle with hero phones housed in a fusion of metal and glass materials. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are already metallic and their replacements, purportedly the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, are only expected to be manufactured the same way.

Then Samsung’s foremost servings for the year – the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Edge that generated excitement for their high-end design language and build materials – are sure-fire formidable foes, again melding metal and glass to serve as gorgeous and solid shell for the devices. It should follow that the Galaxy Note 5 will join the league.

Why the G4 Note as next Nexus?

Now, opting for the G4 Note is the natural course to take for Google. Settling for the plastic-covered regular LG G4 will put the next Nexus phone at a great disadvantage as phone shoppers would most likely look beyond and make a go for the better-looking alternatives.

Plus if reports are to be believed that the LG G4 Note is the new gold standard for Google’s Nexus partner then it’s only logical to pattern the next Nexus after the G4 Note. The LG phablet is basically the LG G4 but with a 5.6-inch front panel and on-board stylus. The latter feature, might be dropped from the Nexus 2015 phone final cut as stylus is normally not included in the existing Nexus device template – both the smartphone and the tablet.

The LG G4 Note is rumoured to come out in the second half of 2015, which is not too far with the usual Nexus rollout schedule. The native Android phone release date normally happens in the last quarter of the year.
