Michael Dell: Keeping or Letting Go of Low Margin PC Business? [Photos]
Founder and President of Dell Inc. Michael Dell said he would like to transform the company from being a product company to a services and solutions company that will aid businesses and entrepreneurs.
This will be done asthe company will retain its consumer PC business. President and chief executive of Dell Inc. Michael Dell expressed that the company will retain its consumer PC business though it is a small part of the business.
Michael Dell said in the recent Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco that the consumer PC business is the smallest unit in the business even though the part of the business made some noise due to marketing and communications. Nevertheless, the company expressed their commitment in pursuing the part of the business.
He also altered the comments they made last week when they said that they will be committing to both corporate and consumer of the PC business.
The company also expressed their support to Microsoft Windows 8 operating system as a tablet platform. He stated that Dell would release a wide array of products around the new Windows OS.
Dell said that the company will now lessen their focus on the hardware. He also commented that Apple’s iPad dominates the market and Android failed as a tablet operating system. Michael Dell said that he wanted to transform the company from a product company to a service and solutions company.
Dell Trials and Hardships
In the summit, Michael Dell relate two of the hardest moments in Dell. First is missing the FCC approval. Second is when Dell got an increase in revenues from $800 million to $1 billion in just a year. He said that Dell hit the wall and they were unable to proceed.
Michael Dell was asked three times if he regretted the comment he made when Apple was at its lowest point in late 1990s wherein he said that he would shut down Apple. He did not gave further comments on his claims he made towards Apple Inc. in 1997. He just brushed the question and said that he is the chief executive of Dell and not a CEO for hire.
Web 2.0 Summit
Web 2.0 summit is an annual event that features an immense discussion of the Internet. The invitation only event features only the prominent entrepreneurs and thinks in the web community. This year’s event was held last October 17-19, 2011 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The theme of this year’s event is "The Data Frame".
Other participants of the Web 2.0 Summit, Facebook co-founder Sean Parker warned Facebook that it needed better tools for power users. Yahoo's Ross Levinsohn also talked about Yahoo's bid for premium video, and Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo also boasted about how its integration with Apple's iOS had boosted the company's userbase.
