Microsoft Plans To Stop Using Nokia And Windows Phone Brands
Microsoft plans to drop Nokia and Windows Phone brands during the holiday season on its marketing materials. The company is alleged to rebrand its smartphones and instead of using Nokia and Windows Phone brands, it will only use Windows.
GeeksOnGadgets acquired a confidential internal document of Microsoft that states the company's intention to make the Lumia its "hero brand" for all upcoming devices. It also reports that Microsoft is planning to use Windows for all of its marketing materials instead of the Windows Phone brand for its mobile OS.
As for the Nokia brand, Microsoft only obtained it to do away from the Windows Phone brand and on its latest ad on Lumia 930, Windows Phone was never mentioned at all, according to The Verge. Microsoft is rebranding on its Nokia handsets even though Nokia was a popular brand for places outside the U.S. According to the same report, the Cortana ads never mentioned the Windows Phone brand as well. Same thing happened on the latest ads on Lumia 530, Lumia 730 and Lumia 830. Microsoft will need a single brand for its handsets and it seems like Lumia will certainly be the brand. Aside from the Nokia handsets it can be noticed that the company stopped using the Windows Phone brand as seen on the recently launched HTC One M8 for Windows.
It is no news that Microsoft was rebranding and it might be the company's move towards its vision of "One Windows" where Windows will be available across all platforms. Microsoft is believed to be building a new version of OS that will run on PCs, tablets and smartphones. It does not mean that Microsoft will stop making Windows Phone instead, it will just drop the name of the brand. Giving it one brand name would make sense since it will be available across different platforms anyways. The One Windows vision could also mean that Microsoft will push on a universal apps across all platforms.
Windows 9 or Windows Threshold's technology preview is expected to be released on Sept. 30 for developers and tech enthusiasts and the new operating system is expected to be released in Spring of 2015.
