Microsoft to solve 'sleep' issue causing Surface Pro 4 batteries to drain
The problem is occurring because of Intel's new Skylake chipset
Owners of the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book are experiencing a problem with the device, which the company promised to address by the beginning of 2016. Both devices go into sleep mode or low power mode after an unexpected battery drain.
“Yes, the 'standby' battery life is an issue we are working on and have been working on”, said Microsoft.
After users’ complaints filled 31 pages on its official Surface forums, Microsoft decided to take some action. The main concern has been the standby battery life of the device. The official Microsoft forum posts mentioned that even if the device goes in sleep mode, the CPU stays active causing the device to heat and also causing a massive battery drain.
Currently, the battery doesn’t go into deep ‘sleep’ and there are applications running at the background. But the company said it can be fixed only by early next year.
The problem is occurring because of Intel's new Skylake chipset, according to a report in Windows Central. It seems the issue isn’t limited to these two devices, however. Owners of laptops made by non-Microsoft PC manufacturers like Lenovo, HP, and Dell are also facing the same issue.
Microsoft did try to address the issue partially. The company released a new driver to combat the crashing display driver issue. In certain scrolling situations on Web pages, the display seems to crash or hang in between. The company claims the new driver will address this problem.
“We are continuing to investigate the issues that you are all reporting. We are listening”, says Microsoft.
