Microsoft Surface Defeats Google Nexus 10 Selling Prowess; Reasons Why it Happened
The Nexus 10 sales numbers are peaking but the Microsoft Surface definitely outnumbered the Android 10-inch tablet in a recent report. Google's Nexus 10 tablet has been a successful device, yet analyst Benedict Evans revealed the disparate sales of the 10-inch Nexus device compared to the Microsoft Surface.
The Evans Report
Analysis strategy consultant Benedict Evans revealed his detective work about the Nexus 10 and found out that is it not doing better compared before. Evans released the initial figure of 680,000 Nexus 10 tablets are currently in use based on traffic data from Google Play Store, gravely small compared to 6.8 million of Nexus 7 using the Play Store.
This estimate means that Microsoft Surface tablet defeated Nexus 10 in sales with 1.5 million units, universally. A perplexing result because Microsoft Surface is being sold with higher price tag than the Nexus 10. So what would make the Surface better than the Nexus?
1. Tablet-Laptop hybrid mode which allows owner to use Microsoft Surface in dual mode.
2. Possible growing popularity of Windows 8.
3. Influence of Microsoft Enterprise on all devices running Windows 8. Owners may access all games, applications and programs under such criteria.
Ultimately, these are rough estimates for most consumer technology actual sales figure are hard to determine and usually reported based on approximation.
Technological Differences
There is a great difference between the two operating system running these tablets. Android is an open source system which allows third-party developers to modify, customise and distribute the OS efficiently. Windows OS is relatively locked to only devices which can run the system, closely similar to iOS. But they offer things the other one may not have.
Software Uniqueness | Google Android OS | Microsoft Windows 8 |
Wide-range of Applications | Well-supplied from Google Play Store | Still growing with more or less than 500,000 available |
Versatility and Compatibility | Highly customisable by almost any one | Limited to Windows running devices and difficult to unlock system bootloader |
Runs Computers | Not yet, Chrome OS is the close resemblance of Android in computers | One of the pioneer in computer evolution and many OS depends on Windows |
Security Aspects | Due to open-source feature, can easily be infected by malware if not well-protected | Free service from Microsoft Security Essentials, firewall, and other guards for malware |
Exclusive Services | One account to access all Google Accounts. Clouding, YouTube, Email, social site and more | One account for SkyDrive, Outlook, MS Office, Skype; access to Microsoft Enterprise |
Constant Updates | Yes, but depends on manufacturer | Depends which OS generation. |
Display Technology | Currently supports large display screen | Still awaiting for the new update to support large screens |
Google's Nexus line promotes the power of Android OS and attract more people to shift from iOS, Blackberry or Windows, yet Windows 8 opens the door for more hackers, developers and creators to make games and applications fit to their devices, leading Windows devices to grab a slice to Android's pie.
