Microsoft Surface on Windows 10 Cloud: Company to increase adoption of cloud services via low-cost hardware
May 2 is round the corner and Microsoft is looking to conquer new territories by venturing into cloud services with a tweaked Windows 10 version and a low-cost Surface device. This is also a move to combat Google Chromebook’s rise in the educational market.
The Redmond company is focusing primarily on software and how that can take users to the cloud. It also offers a great opportunity for Microsoft to debut new hardware that backs up the drive to the cloud. It is rumoured that the company will release a Surface device with low-end specs that will use the Windows 10 cloud. The new variant of Windows 10 will focus on cloud services and considers lower cost technology. Up to now Microsoft has kept its Surface brand only for the higher-end equipment.
However, the recent specs leaks around Windows 10 cloud machines shows that Microsoft will be very much in the game, even when its via third-party hardware. The leak was first reported by Windows Central’s Daniel Rubino. The report includes the real-world targets that a Windows 10 Cloud machine must achieve, and these include, twenty seconds from cold boot to login, ten hours of battery life for all-day use and resume to login in less than two seconds. These features are already present in Google Chromebooks.
The report also includes recommended minimum specs, such as, 32GB of storage and 64GB storage in a 64-bit system, 4GB RAM, quad-core Celeron or better processor, fast SSD or eMMC and a battery in excess of 40Whr. Touch-enabled screen and pen are optional. As is clear, these specs are a bit better than the Surface 3 that was discontinued last year. Thus, Microsoft could be looking to bridge the gap by bringing-in a Surface 3-styled laptop. The educational sector is set to feature in the May 2 event.
It is now more or less clear that the Redmond tech giant is looking to increase the adoption of its cloud services via the use of low-cost hardware. Thus, Microsoft may stun Google, as well as Apple, by introducing a brand new Surface CloudBook on Windows 10 Cloud. Microsoft has a whole lot of manufacturers taking care of the hardware. However, the company does need to promote its software and the solutions it offers. This is where Windows 10 on cloud must be considered in any new hardware Microsoft releases.
