Miguel Cotto Says A Rematch Would Be In The Works For Floyd Mayweather Jr And Manny Pacquiao After The Duo’s May 2 Showdown
There is a no rematch clause in the legacy-defining bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. However, four-division Puerto Rican champion Miguel Cotto believes that there is a great possibility that Mayweather and Pacquiao will meet in the ring for the second time.
Cotto recently sat down with ESPN’s Sports Nation to share his thoughts on who will win between Mayweather and Pacquiao. Cotto is one of the five fighters who have fought Mayweather and Pacquiao, and having been inside the ring with both boxers, Cotto knows how the two welterweights will play on fight night.
According to Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), Pacquiao’s speed and explosiveness could mean trouble for Mayweather. However, he believes that Mayweather will fight smart against Pacquiao. He said that Mayweather will put a comfortable distance and contain Pacquiao’s speed.
Cotto believes that Pacquiao has an edge over Mayweather because he knows that Freddie Roach, whom he recently hired as coach, will train the Filipino to be ready for the fight against the undefeated American fighter. Cotto also thinks a rematch is likely to take place between the two pound-for-pound fighters.
“I think a rematch possibility is going to be a big picture after this fight,” Cotto said. “But I think Manny will have a big chance.”
Meanwhile, Cotto is set to return to the ring against an unnamed opponent on June 6 in New York City. In a separate interview with ESPN Deportes show “A Los Golpes,” Cotto revealed that they are still working out the best opponents for the proposed fight date. He is expected to meet with Roach in Los Angeles to discuss who he should fight in June.
Cotto is still mulling over his options over his next opponent, but a few names have already been mentioned, including 41-year-old junior middleweight Cornelius Bundrage, Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Sergio Mora and welterweight Timothy Bradley.
Cotto recently signed a three-year contract with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. His June 6 fight will be the first from his contract reportedly worth $50 million with the American rapper’s sports management company.
