Miss Universe 2013: As Curtain Closes, Drama Begins
The recent Miss Universe 2013 pageant held in Moscow, Russia has now been concluded with surprise and accompanied by many controversies and dramas.
The pageant began with 86 contestants vying for the crown, but promptly only 16 were chosen to move ahead: Costa Rica, Ukraine, China, Ecuador, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Spain, the United States, Nicaragua, Switzerland, India, Brazil, and the Philippines.
The countries that made it to the top 10 were Spain, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, India, Brazil, the United States, Ukraine, Ecuador, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. From there only Ecuador, Brazil, Spain, Venezuela, and the Philippines made it to the Top 5.
Among these five beauties Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler grabbed the coveted crown making history with the seventh win while some of the contestants were left behind with their own stories and controversies. As the pageant curtain closed the drama began.
Here are the top trending controversies of Miss Universe 2013:
1. Monic Perez
Monic Perez, Puerto Rico's delegate at Miss Universe 2013 was certainly the most talked about contestant in the pageant. She placed among Top 16 but did not make it further. She has become the center of post-pageant controversy for not making it to the top. Some critics claimed that she was sabotaged by Miss Universe Organization while others said that it was all her team's fault.
2. Miss Philippines
Miss Philippines Ariella Arida was the Winner of the "Fan Votes" and through this she made it to the finals and finished as third runner-up (which meant that she has won by popularity and not by worth).
Throughout the globe, fans has complained and questioned that she was not the "Fan Favorite." Some even claimed that Miss Myanmar Moe Set Wine was the one who won the online voting.
Some facts about Ariella Arida:
- Ariella was the only contestant who did not have a translator.
- She delivered first-rate answer with great confidence.
- In the Top 5, Arida was the only Asian standing among the Latinas.
- She was the only contestant who wore her hair straight.
- The yellow color of her gown made her visibly stand out, however some critics claimed that "the yellow gown" prohibited Arida from winning the title.
3. Fan Favorites Did Not Make It To the Top 16
One of the most awful moments of Miss Universe 2013 was the elimination of some of the best contestants. In particular, Miss Poland Paulina as she was a fan favorite and the strongest contender for the crown since the start of the pageant.
Other than Paulina, there are many other who did not make it to the top: Australia and France, whose semi-final string dated from 2008 and 2009, respectively. Israel has sent its first black Miss Universe delegate this year. Even the host candidate was also expelled.
So the fans asked have they been put back out of politics. The reason these contestants didn't make it to the top still remains a mystery.
4. Alleged Pregnancy of Miss Universe 2012
Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo presented the Yamamay Million Dollar bikini, casing herself with the faux fur, which sparked the rumors of her being pregnant.
5. Miss Universe Ratings
Miss Universe 2013 drew 3.8 million viewers, which were about half the number as compared to 2012 contest, which drew 6.1 million viewers.
