'Modern Family' Season 06 Episode 17 Recap: 'Closet? You'll Love It!'
In this week’s episode of the hit comedy series “Modern Family” Jay and Claire revisit an old company commercial that Jay wants to remake in order to compete with his business rival. Meanwhile, Gloria is pestered by a peeping Tom drone while Cam and Mitch try to get Lily through a school talent show.
Cam has always been an overachiever in school, so he feels that his daughter Lily should excel in extra-curricular activities like he did. Unfortunately, they discovered that Lily is tone deaf and can’t carry a tune. Mitch tells Cam not to be too critical and to just let Lily sing since she doesn’t seem to be nervous or bothered at all. Eventually, Mitch discovers that Cam is so worried because he doesn’t want Lily to embarrass herself, and therefore, embarrass him in front of his nemesis Andrew. Mitch thinks that Cam is being petty for worrying about a nemesis from years ago. He changes his mind when he sees that Andrew is actually married to Simon, his law school rival. The two of them take it personally and both start to wonder if Lily can beat out Andrew and Simon’s daughter.
Just before Lily was scheduled to take the stage, a really talented girl performs and really nails her song. Lily freaks out and tells her parents that she wants to back out. Mitch and Cam disagree at first but Andrew and Simon leave with their daughter who suddenly feels feverish. Once Andrew and Simon are gone, Mitch and Cam agree to pull Lily out to save all of them from the embarrassment.
Over at Jay’s house, he’s annoyed by his business rival’s new commercial. The catchy tune has been a massive advertising success, so he decides to remake an old commercial that he made decades ago. He says that the ad did well before and there is no reason why it shouldn’t work again now. Claire has been working on a new ad concept and is devastated to learn that her father has decided to go the old school route.
Claire thinks Jay’s old slogan “Closets? You’ll love it!” makes no sense but Jay insists it’s catchy. The ad goes into production and the entire team agree that Jay isn’t an effective spokesperson because he sounds grumpy. Claire confronts Jay and he starts to question himself. He feels bad thinking he is turning into his own grumpy father whom no one in the family liked.
Elsewhere in the house, Gloria is being pestered by a drone that likes to hover over her and takes videos while she sunbathes. Phil, Manny and Luke vow to take down the drone to defend her honour. Unfortunately, the drone ends up taking videos of them looking like idiots in their attempt to take it down. After several failed attempts, Jay goes out to help the rest of the boys and appear to be more fun. They all worked together to bring down the drone, but Gloria ends up being the one to shoot it down from the balcony. The boys thought they successfully hit the drone and Gloria just let them enjoy their moment of glory.
Meanwhile, Haley is hanging out with her friend Andy and thinks that Andy’s girlfriend isn’t giving him enough attention. Beth is busy working and Haley starts to question if she’s even real because she’s never around. When Andy gets appendicitis, Haley rushes over to his side and tells him that his girlfriend should have dropped everything to be there. She starts to confess to Andy that he has a shot if he wanted to go after her, but she is interrupted when Beth arrives. Haley is embarrassed and leaves the couple alone while she's feeling conflicted about her relationship with Andy. “Modern Family” airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ABC.
