The second generation Moto G has arrived. Even though previous reports referred to it as Moto G2, it has come out with the very same name as its predecessor, although Motorola refers to it as Moto G (Gen 2).

The original Moto G came with a price tag of under $200. Although few U.S. carriers offered the Moto G, it managed to achieve impressive sales in the U.S. We have compared the original Moto G (2013) with the all-new Moto G (2014) to see whether it would be a good decision to buy the upgraded Moto G.

Design

The new Moto G looks quite similar to its predecessor, but Moto G (Gen 2) has a sleeker look and is thinner than Moto G. When it comes to weight though, weighing 143 grams, the original Moto G is lighter than the new Moto G, which weighs 149 grams. People loved the appeal and design of the original Moto G, which is probably why Motorola has offered a bigger device with a very similar design.

Display

The original Moto G came with 4.7-inch HD screen which supports 720p. It offers a pixel density of 329 ppi.

The new Moto G is packed with a large-sized display of 5 inches, but the resolution is still 720p. Its pixel density is 294 ppi. Nevertheless, the new Moto G's display is very bright and offers a marvelous viewing experience.

Camera

One of the problems with the original Moto G was that it came with an average quality 5 MP camera. Motorola has upgraded the camera on the new Moto G to 8 MP, delivering better and sharper images.

OS

Moto G (2013) came preloaded with Android v4.3 Jelly Bean OS. The Android version can be upgraded to v4.4.4 KitKat. Moto G (Gen 2) is shipped with Android v4.4.4 KitKat OS. It comes with a host of new features from Motorola such as the Motorola Assist and Motorola Alert.

External Storage

The Moto G 2013 edition did not offer its users with an external memory slot. However, the new Moto G supports up to 32 GB of expandable memory via microSD.

Beside these four major differences, the other features of Moto G (2013) such as the 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, Adreno 305 graphics, 1 GB RAM and 2,070 mAh battery are also available on the Moto G (2014).
