Motorola Droid Razr: Top Ten Reasons Why Apple Should Be Scared
The battle for smartphone supremacy has gotten increasingly tough of late with such giants like Apple and Samsung competing to get the most of the mobile phone market. Apple's iPhone 4s, released last week and already setting sales records, has overtaken its Android competitors and is now the reigning champion. But that doesn't mean that Apple can rest easy as a new batch of Android smartphones is coming to the market.
First up to challenge the iPhone 4s is Motorola's new Droid Razr. Motorola has had good luck with the Razr line with the first Razr being the thinnest cell phone introduced in 2004 and helped push Motorola to the number two spot back in 2005. The Razr was also the fourth best selling cell phone of all time. Motorola is hoping to get some of that prestigious pedigree to give them another best seller with the Droid Razr.
"Our mission was to create a true object of desire, incredibly thin, that delivers features without compromise," Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha said during the launch of the new Droid Razr.
Indeed the Motorola Droid Razr just by looking at its specs has the iPhone 4s beat in some key features. Here's a brief breakdown of how the Motorola Droid Razr matches up against the Apple iPhone 4s.
Physical features. The Motorola Droid Razr trounces the iPhone 4s in this feature. Not only is the company marketing the Droid Razr as the "thinnest smartphone" in the world at only 7.1 mm, it also weighs less at 4.5 ounces. In comparison the iPhone 4s is pretty hefty at 9.3 mm and weighs in at 7.9 ounces.
Data. Once again another plus to the Droid Razr. The Droid Razr will be able to support Verizon's 4G LTE technology. 4G technology is the next generation in wireless technology. It means faster network speeds for users with access to 4G. Apple iPhone users will have to wait until the iPhone 5 comes out to be able to access 4G.
Screen Size. The Droid Razr has a screen size of 4.3 inches which is bigger than the iPhone 4s screen size of 3.5 inches. The iPhone 4s does have a slightly better screen resolution at 960x640 but it doesn't really outdo the Droid Razr's screen resolution of 960x540 pixels by a whole lot.
Display Tech. The Motorola Droid Razr not only has a bigger screen size but it's also a Super AMOLED screen. This means that in comparison with the iPhone 4s which only has LED Backlit, the Super AMOLED screen will have a higher contrast and richer color than the LED screen.
Durability. The Droid Razr despite being super thin will also be super durable. RAZR is "made with Kevlar fiber for strength and Corning Gorilla Glass for scratch resistance." It also has a "water repellent nanocoating," which Motorola says will "protect the phone against every day spills."
Battery life. There have already been user complaints about the Apple iPhone 4s battery life being less than stellar. Apple has said that its iPhone 4s is only expected to have 8 hours of talk time on a 3G network and 6 hours of internet use and 10 hours of video playback. Motorola claims that its Droid Razr will have a 1780mAh battery that can provide 12.5 hours of talk time and 8.9 hours of video playback.
Processor and Memory. The Droid Razr runs on a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and has 1Gb or RAM. The iPhone 4s on the other hand only has an 800 mhz dual core processer and only has 512Mb of RAM.
Special Features. Motorola claims the Droid Razr will be the first smartphone that can stream movies and TV shows on High Definition through streaming services like Netflix. This special feature will be very attractive to people who want to watch their television and games outside the house.
Connectivity and Storage. The iPhone 4s has internal storage that runs from 16Gb to 64 Gb. Apple is also offering its cloud service, the iCloud to let users sync the iPhone to any iOS device. The Droid Razr has 16 Gb of internal storage and has a pre-installed 16Gb microSD card which can be upgraded to a 32 Gb micro SD card for more storage. The Razr also has MotoCast which can sync the Droid Razr to any computer.
"You can stream content from your computer straight to your pocket (or purse) so your personal content is always within reach," says the Motorola press release. "And, because you don't have to upload to a third-party site, you're saving time while gaining peace of mind. That's right - your files stay safe because they stay with you."
Price. Although the Motorola Droid Razr is $100 more expensive than the iPhone at $300 the price is still competitive enough considering that the Droid Razr has 32 Gb of internal storage which is the same as the iPhone 4s 32 Gb variant.
