It's almost a month since Android 4.4 KitKat has been released, but most devices running it are Nexuses and Google Play editions. If you are wondering about the future of your smartphone or tablet and chances on getting Android 4.4, here are the upgrade plans by several manufacturers.

Currently Running and Receiving It

ASUS Nexus 7 2013 and 2012 are now upgradable to Android 4.4.2 KitKat via Over-the-Air update delivering several bug fixes and performance stability features.

HTC One Google Play and Developer editions have their official Android 4.4 KitKat which can be downloaded by OTA as well. It is expected that HTC One Sense variant will receive the latest firmware starting from end of December till Q1 of 2014. Moreover, HTC Droid DNA and Butterfly S are also being reviewed to receive Android 4.4.

LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 are also upgradable to Android 4.4.2 same with Nexus 7 devices. In addition, LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play edition owners can now update the tablet to the latest version of KitKat while LG G2 users may have to wait till next year for Android 4.4.

Motorola confirms firmware upgrade for Moto X and started to roll out the update on November 9th from Verizon followed by T-Mobile variant on November 21st. Aside from Moto X, other Motorola smartphones such as Droid Maxx, Droid Mini, Droid RAZR HD, Droid RAZR Maxx HD, Droid RAZR M, Electrify M and Atrix HD are all getting Android 4.4 KitKat probably by next year.

Several devices under Samsung Galaxy line are getting official Android 4.4 KitKat but the first recipient is Galaxy S4 Google Play edition with Android 4.4.2 version. Galaxy S4, S3, Note 3, Note 2, Ace 2 and 3, Core, Fame and Fresh are all listed to Samsung's upgrade plans for 2014.

Sony Xperia Z series are firsthand on getting Android 4.4 among their Xperia line up which includes Xperia Z, Z1, Z Ultra, ZL, ZR, Tablet Z plus mid-range devices such as Xperia SP, T, TX and V. Currently, Sony is rolling out Android 4.3 update for Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra.

Excluded or Unconfirmed Devices to Get Android 4.4

Manufacturers are strict on following the 18-month window update period for smartphones and tablets which is something you should check first on your device. Once its release date is beyond 18-month window, it is unlikely any updates will be made for the device.

Here are some notable devices excluded from Android 4.4 due to expiration or hardware compatibility:

1. Acer Android tablets from the previous two years are not receiving any KitKat updates. Updates with bug fixes and improvements may still continue.

2. Galaxy Nexus has been excluded to receive any further updates beyond Android 4.1 Jelly Bean due to window period expiration.

3. HTC One X and One X+ are still not included for Android 4.4 KitKat.

4. Motorola's earlier smartphones such as Droid 4, Droid Bionic, Electrify 2 and original Droid RAZR/Droid RAZR Maxx are locked in their current OS.

5. Several Samsung devices such as Galaxy Ace 1, Galaxy Mini 1 and 2, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note 1 and other older devices are possibly locked forever to their current OS.

6. Sony Xperia C and M are still unofficial on getting Android 4.4 KitKat. Older Xperia units may remain on their current OS.

7. LG Optimus and L line aren't confirmed yet to receive any Android 4.4 KitKat update.

In case, your Android device isn't getting Android 4.4 KitKat, don't get disppointed just yet as custom-made ROMs are out there almost always available with the latest software version. You may use them to level up your device but you'll let go of the exclusive apps provided by manufacturers for you such as Optimus, Sense, TouchWiz or Xperia UIs.
