‘New Girl,’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ crossover episode confirmed for October
Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Jake (Andy Samberg) are set to meet as “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “New Girl” are in for a crossover. At the US comedy shows’ Television Critics Association panel on Monday, TV network Fox confirmed the characters from both shows will meet in New York on Oct. 11 for a special episode.
As it’s easier to form a storyline with Los Angeles-based friends taking a New York vacation than to have a whole group of NY detectives taking an assignment on the west coast, the episode will be set in Los Angeles.
“The crossover episode has historically been the artistic high point of any show that has dared to attempt it,” Elizabeth Meriweather, the creator of “New Girl,” said. “Maybe you remember ‘Blackout Thursday’ on NBC, or even further back the infamous Alf/Gilligan’s Island’ crossover of the late 1980s. We will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s. We know we have a big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone.”
She quipped, “There’s a 50 percent chance Alf will also be in both episodes. But there’s also a 50 percent chance that it is a lie,” referring to the ‘80s sitcom character.
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” co-creator Dan Goor added, “We’re all huge fans of ‘New Girl’ here at ‘Nine-Nine,’ and we’re excited to see our characters interact and to work with their incredible writers and producers. And also to see what their craft services are like, compared to ours.”
“New Girl” stars Deschanel as Jess, an “adorkable” offbeat teacher who moved into three guys’ apartment in L.A. Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone also star. It will return on air in September for its sixth season. Season 5 is currently airing on Eleven in Australia.
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” on the other hand, is set in New York and stars Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta. Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti and Joe Lo Truglio join Samberg in the show. It is also set to return in September for its fourth season. It airs on SBS in Australia.
