The Nexus 7 has often been compared to the iPad mini mostly in terms of value for money. It has not really been Android vs iOS or Google vs Apple. What reviewers would always point out is the expensive pricing of the mini. Then a more expensive Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was announced. Small tablet shoppers now have to compare the pricing and specs of three small tablets from three tech giants.

The Note 8 is even more expensive ($399) than the mini ($329). It seems to make sense because of its S Pen. But then not all tablet users feel the need for a stylus. So the Nexus 7 ($199) remains as the more practical choice for many Android fans. But then the new Nexus 7 and the iPad mini 2 could change this picture.

The upgraded Nexus 7 is sometimes called the Nexus 7 HD+ in rumours. It will reportedly boast of some powerful specs, a quality-driven rear camera, and a beautiful screen display. Its price tag should be around $199 or a bit more. The new Google device is expected to ship with Android 5 Key Lime Pie in July. Its unveiling is expected at the Google I/O announcement in May. This early, it is assumed the new N7 will be the cheapest small tablet from a big tech name.

The iPad mini 2 will reportedly arrive sometime in the last quarter of the year - just in time for the original mini's anniversary. It is expected to be more expensive due to a much improved screen display. The Note 8, meanwhile, is expected to arrive in Australia by end of April.

How does a tablet shopper choose from a selection of three small but powerful tablets? For some buyers, it's all about the timing. If the iPad mini 2 will take more months before hitting the stores, the the choice could be down to two Android devices.

Real Apple fans will wait for the iPad mini 2 even if the new Nexus 7 would pack in better specs and features. But in the Android community, many users are eager to try the Note 8.

If you have set aside some budget for a small tablet this year, it is best that you let all three devices "speak" before choosing one. At this point, the specs being mentioned about the new Nexus 7 and the new iPad mini are still mere rumours, anyway.

Then again, if you can't wait any longer, the Galaxy Note 8 does not seem to be a bad choice.
