New Pope 2013: Grateful for the Gift He Received, Pope Francis Kisses on Cheek Argentinean President Kirchner
Perhaps already missing so much his native Argentina, newly proclaimed Pope Francis was so happy to have received a gift that would remind him of his birthplace. He was so happy that he even kissed the cheek of the gift giver, who happened to be none other than his political nemesis when he was still a former cardinal, the president of Argentina, Cristina Kirchner.
Ms Kirchner got surprised. But would the kiss then, mean, that all are bygones now between the two leaders?
President Kirchner was the first international head of state to visit at the Vatican City on Monday and meet the new pontiff of the Roman Catholic church, who happened to be nonetheless the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
Pope Francis graciously accepted the Argentinean president in his holy turf. The Vatican did not issue any statement relating to the meeting, but reports circulated the encounter between the two remained cordial, even as it is public knowledge that the pair collided since the former Cardinal Joseph Bergoglio openly rebuked Ms Kirchner's government's socially liberal policies, such as Argentina's legalisation of same-sex marriages.
The two exchanged gifts on Sunday, but it is not clear if this transpired before or after lunch.
'I was so happy he invited me to meet him and that I got to eat his last lunch with him before he becomes Pope." Ms Kirchner said. He was so "calm, confident and at peace, tranquil."
As token of appreciation to the meeting and welcome gesture to his new post, Ms Kirchner gave Pope Francis a mate gourd, which the Daily Mail described as sort of traditional tea urn. It came with a straw, from which the new Roman Catholic pontiff could put and drink his favourite Argentinian tea.
Surprised and elated at the gesture, Pope Francis kissed Ms Kirchner on the cheek.
"Never before has a Pope kissed me," she said.
The Argentinean president is one of the 132 global representatives expected to grace the occasion of the new Pope Francis' inaugural mass on Tuesday, March 19.
During Monday's meeting, Ms Kirchner asked Pope Francis if he could intervene in her country's dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands.
It is not yet clear as to how much intervention the Pope would make on this one, Perhaps just plainly calling for Divine Intervention instead?
