New Toshiba Kirabook is Better than Apple’s MacBook Pro Retina at 22 Hours of Battery Life
Intel's Haswell processor changed the game for laptops. Companies like Apple, Sony and Samsung were all able to extend the battery life of their notebooks when they went for Haswell. This time, Toshiba is raising the bar for what Haswell laptops should be. The company's new Dynabook ultrabook will be offering 22 hours of battery life. How is that for an all-day charge?
Most ultrabooks today offer an average of 12 hours of battery life. Toshiba is out to double this battery life with its latest Dynabook Kira V634/27K. If 12 hours is already impressive, people will be pleased to know that there is now a laptop that can last up to 22 hours. That is just 2 hours short of a full day. Despite Toshiba's announcement, many analysts remain skeptical about.
Tech manufacturers have the tendency to be "generous" about their claims. Even if their devices fall short of the battery life they claim, companies can easily dismiss it as subjective to usage. The verdict comes down to people who will use the new ultrabook.
Some of the reported specs for the Dynabook Kira V634/27K include 13.3-inch screen and 1,366-by-768-pixel display. The device is not touch enabled or high definition; therefore, it does not take a toll on the battery life. The lower end specs allow Toshiba to save on energy consumption. However, when users move up a notch to the higher end Dynabook Kira with 2,560-by-1,440-pixel display and touch screen features, it will yield a different battery life. These reduce the battery life to 14 hours. Compared to other ultrabooks, a 14-hour battery life can still be considered impressive.
For now, the Dynabook Kira V634/27K is available in Japan only. Analysts think that if Toshiba can pull it off in Japan, it will be just a matter of time before the ultrabook hit other markets across the globe. There should also be significant support from the market for a laptop that can last as long as such.
Similar to other high-end Haswell products, people will have to be ready to spend a few more dollars. According to estimates, the Dynabook Kira can start around $1,450. This is more expensive than the starting price of the 13-inch late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.
