New World Record: Facebook Post gets One Million Comments
A seemingly ordinary Facebook post got into the books of Guinness Book of World Records after it received one million comments.
Just like everybody else, Tracey Hodgson and Cathy Matthews in an open Facebook group called "Ffgpioneers/gwr/attempt" last Oct. 30, 2011 then members started commenting on the post until it reached one million comments on Jan. 31.
The post read, "hi all!!! , hope everyone is ok today , this is 'the one', please talk about anything you like here, whatever you want to talk about, change topic whenever you like also, just have fun , . so how are you all today?( please someone speak quick or i'll have no nails left!!!) ;-) x x x."
Another member Cathy Matthews helped in setting the new world record. She said that she contributed in the process by typing two letter words and post it over and over to count as post.
According to Sfist, the group was established to specifically beat the world record for Facebook update with the most comments. Fox40 reported that the members posted a total of 1,001,552 posts. Most of the members of the groups were fans of the game "Frontierville" developed by Zynga. Zynga also developed the most popular Facebook game in 2010, "Cityville."
Hodgson explains how they came about the idea to break the world record for Facebook comments: "I...got involved in helping with the game's community groups as an administrator. My friend Nattie Murphy saw the previous record and suggested I try to break it - it sounded like a great idea for our group to show what we are capable of when we work together."
The group said that the project became more feasible due to new commenting system introduced by Facebook wherein users can simply press enter to post a comment.
Although the title does not include any prize money, it comes with a spot for fame. Matthews see this fame as her way of "leaving my mark on the world .... because I'm really not a spring chicken anymore and I really haven't done anything phenomenal."
