The LG Nexus 5, according to Google, is riding on a "great momentum," its strong performance in the sales department likely leading to a refresh or a 2014 Nexus 6 release date.

Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette declared last week that sales number of the LG-assembled Nexus 5 has been very strong so far following its release in the second hand of 2014. Pichette, according to The Verge, reported that "we had great momentum on the Nexus 5 and Chromecast."

The Google report, however, withheld specific numbers, added the tech site. To picture Google's concept of great momentum, the numbers in subject should be significantly near the units shifted by Apple and Samsung, who are leading the pack of smartphone global device makers.

Recently, LG has indicated that its partnership with Google in the Nexus 5 has proved fruitful, enough to propel the South Korean tech firm to third place in the stiffening smartphone race.

If indeed the Nexus 5 is a relative success, both for Google and LG, then a replacement this 2014 should become automatic.

Despite the rosy indicators though, coming straight from Google, the whole Nexus line is in danger of getting the retirement treatment, a plan that according to Eldar Murtazin will start taking shape this year and will be completed by 2015.

If Murtazin is to be believed, the Nexus 6 release will be the last from Google and its still unknown manufacturing partner.

But the announced Google-Lenovo deal last week, which transferred ownership of Motorola Mobility from Google to Lenovo, should provide clues on what assembly point will the Nexus 6 emanate from.

Believing that the agreement will translate to better ties between the two parties, analysts predicted that the next Nexus will be completed under the supervision of Lenovo, with the of course the expressed blessing granted by Google.

Most likely, Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola will lead to the manufacture of a Motorola-branded Nexus 6, with the former, as the latter's parent company, taking charge of the global distribution.

Earlier, the Nexus 6 was rumoured to stay within the LG stable with the soon to come out LG G Pro 2 touted as its base model.

Yet with Lenovo-Motorola now figuring prominently in the Nexus rumour mill, specs and features of the Nexus 6 are now anybody's guess though it should be safe to assume that Google's next smartphone bet will slug it out with the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5, highly speculated to come out this year and should serve as the Nexus 6's major foes, in overall capabilities.

The Nexus 6 release date, whatever the make is, is likely to occur in the second half of 2014, in keeping with Google's upgrade cycle calendar for its flagship smartphone.
