NFL: Cleveland Browns Could Give Up On Johnny Manziel And Draft QB Prospect Marcus Mariota
The Cleveland Browns are reportedly interested in drafting Marcus Mariota in the upcoming rookie selection which could mean the end of the line for another young quarterback prospect in Johnny Manziel, who was drafted by the Cleveland franchise in the draft last National Football League, or NFL, season.
According to an NFL.com report, there is a possibility that the Browns may trade up for Mariota as Browns general manager Ray Farmer has shown in interest in the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner, who reach college football national championship in the recent NCAA football season.
The Cleveland Browns own the No. 12 and No. 19 picks in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft and according the report this potentially could be key in moving up the draft order as Mariota is projected to be a Top 10 or even Top 5 talent in the rookie selection later this year. The controversial and troublesome Manziel, who was selected by the Browns as the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, voluntarily entered rehabilitation in this offseason to address personal issues. With their other quarterback Brian Hoyer hitting free agency, the Browns may be left with Manziel to start under centre the next season.
The 21 year old Mariota declared his eligibility for the 2015 NFL Draft in mid-January and leaves the Oregon Ducks in the NCAA after three years. In his career with the Oregon Ducks, Mariota led his team to 36-5 record with a national championship game appearance. He was also the first Duck to win the coveted Heisman Trophy.
In three years in college Mariota had 10,796 passing yards on 779 of 1,167 completions for a 66.8% passing rate with 105 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also had 14 rushing touchdowns. The Cleveland Browns needed help at the quarterback position after finishing the 2014 season at 7-9. The franchise haven’t gotten to the postseason since 2006.
