The San Diego Chargers are holding on to quarterback Philip Rivers at least for the upcoming season of the National Football League, or NFL. Both sides could work on a long-term extension but according to Rivers the possible move of the Chargers franchise to Los Angeles has made him think twice about a multi-year deal with the franchise.

"What I can control and all I know as of today, I am signed up for one more year. I guess things could change, but with all the uncertainty in many aspects, I don't see it changing before camp gets here, and when camp gets here I'm even more certain to play it out,” Rivers said in an interview with Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “What we’ve established here with my growing family is hard to recreate. It’s hard to up and recreate that. I know that moves are part of life. But that certainly is fair to say that is part of it. The good thing is I’m not under contract in a year where we’d potentially be in Los Angeles.”

After Rivers plays out his deal in the 2015 NFL season, the 33 year old quarterback is set to hit free agency in 2016 when he can possibly leave the Chargers, the only franchise he has played for in 11 NFL seasons.

Since taking over the starting QB spot in his third season, in 2006, Rivers, who was originally the fourth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, has played all regular season games and has led the team to five postseason appearances in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013.

The Chargers are in need of a new NFL stadium for years now and the move to Los Angeles is a possibility although they can still stay in San Diego. An NFL stadium is being built in the L.A. area and teams like the Chargers along with the St. Louis Rams are rumoured to be considering moving their franchise.

Rivers is a five-time NFL Pro Bowler making the team in 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013. For his career, he has an average QB rating of 95.7 with 36,655 passing yards on 3,025 of 4,678 completions, or 64.7 completion percentage to become the Chargers’ second all-time leader in total passing yards and the leader in percentage. Rivers ended up with 4,286 passing yards in the 2014 season clinching a sixth season when he passed for 4,000-plus yards in the regular season.
