Wes Welker is considering retirement, according to a report on Tuesday, due to his history of head injuries that affected his production on the field in the National Football League, or NFL. The Denver Broncos wide receiver is 33 years old and is set to become a free agent next season. Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports reported the update mentioning unnamed sources that Welker is contemplating retirement but that the star wide receiver has yet to make a decision. Welker has apparently consulted or will consult close family and friends about leaving football early.

In a separate report, from NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the writer stated that Welker is not expected to return to play for the Denver Broncos. Welker ended up with 49 receptions for 464 yards and two touchdowns in the 2014 season both career-lows since his playing days with the Miami Dolphins.

Welker was undrafted in 2004 and was picked up by the San Diego Chargers, where he played for just one game. Welker played for the Miami Dolphins from 2004 to 2006 before finding a home with the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2012. He moved to the Denver Broncos and played there from 2013 to 2014. With the Patriots, he made the Pro Bowl five times, in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 but has never won the Super Bowl. In two seasons with Denver, he suffered concussions three times and his performance has taken a big dip on field.

Wes Walker considering retirement because of the series of concussions he suffered is not surprising in the sport. Welker had 1,569 receiving yards on 122 receptions in 2011 and then 1,354 receiving yards on 118 receptions in 2012 with the Patriots. With Denver, he had 778 receiving yards on 73 catches and 464 receiving yards on 49 in 2013 and 2014.
