Nikon has launched its first ever touch screen camera at the CES 2015 in Las Vegas. The DSLR is a successor of the famous Nikon D5300. The D5500 is said to have several improvements and has new features designed specifically for photographers who are still learning and want to experiment with creative techniques.

While a few things between the two cameras remain unchanged like the APS-C or DX format sensor with 24.2 million effective pixels, an Expeed 4 processing engine, a 3.2-inch 1,037,000-dot LCD screen and a built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, there are several new features added.

Touch screen

Nikon for the first time has introduced a touch screen camera. It allows the user to adjust the focus, shutter, aperture, ISO and even the shutter release button through touch. It gives the ability to make the AF point selection as well. You can pinch in to check the focus of the photo. High-resolution pictures and videos can be taken with the camera.

GPS

The D5500 has lost the GPS system which existed in the D5300. Techradar, however has stated that you can use the Nikon's GPS Unit GP-1A as an alternative. However, the Wi-Fi system remains the same in both.

The Flat Picture Control Mode

The Nikon D5500 like the higher range camera has introduced the Flat Picture Control mode like the Monochrome, Standard, Neutral, Portrait, Vivid and Landscape. In this mode, one can adjust the sharpness, contrast and saturation. There is also an extra function available that allows you to adjust the clarity or the micro contrast setting. This particular mode is for those who would like to manipulate the colours in post-production.

ISO range

The ISO sensitivity ranges between 100 to 25,600, the normal range is 100 to 12,800. The camera takes 5 pictures per second in the continuous mode. It can shoot unlimited pictures, stated Techradar. The burst depth, however, is not discovered.

Battery Life

The camera can shoot at the frame rate of 50/60p at Full HD (1920x1080), which is the same as D3500. According to Digital Photography Review, the battery life is much better, it can take 820 shots with a single charge of its EN-EL14a battery.

Prices and availability

The camera is available in black and red versions and will be available from Feb. 5, 2015. The price of the body is £640/USD900, with 18-55, it is £720/USD1,000.
